		<description>Concepts
Her experiences in dealing with broad conflicting values, a daily feature of racism and sexism in Western Europe as an Asian woman, have become the foundation of her political thinking and artistic expression. Her work focuses on the subjectivity of Asian immigrant women and their bodies, exploring how they are perceived not only in Asia but also in Europe.&#38;nbsp;Furthermore, her artistic practice expands into feminist discourse, addressing the conditions of subjugated subjects and the socio-political dimensions of the environment that surrounds them.

In Wien (2018) and Weisser Rahmen (2018) highlight an Asian immigrant's experience with racism and sexism in Vienna. The two works represent violence towards Asian women that extends to Asian women in Europe.

-Sane (2020), Peephole (2021), and Sorrow in the Tireless Year (2022) address the "new norm" within the context of remembering their friendships and social relationships prior to COVID-19 and anti-Asian racism since the onset of the pandemic.&#38;nbsp;

Cacophony (2023) and Dive In (2023) delve into the conflicts faced by a Korean woman in defining her identity within both Asian and Western societies.
Echoes Woven (2026) explores women’s psychotic breakdowns and depression across three generations through autobiographical and speculative approaches.

The collaborative project Swan Song (2023) offers a critique of institutional certifications and presents an expanded understanding of artistic practice.Homescape (2025) highlights inequities in textile production, consumption, and disposal while addressing themes such as women’s labor, environmental issues, racism, and international power dynamics. Her magister diploma work Ajumma &#38;amp; Agassi: Images of Women in the South Korean Mass Media explores how women are still portrayed from a male-dominated perspective. South Korean mass media reflects the broader society, and its outdated images of women reveal the persistent state of gender (in)equality in South Korea.

Exhibition opening: November 15, 2024, 6 – 9 pm
Duration: November 15, 2024 – March 14, 2025Location: IG Bildende Kunst, Gumpendorfer Straße 10-12, 1060 ViennaOrganized by: IG Bildende Kunst
Editions by: YeLa An, Renate Bertlmann, Dunja Krcek, Anna Paul and Werner Reiterer
Curators: Eva Dertschei and Anna Ebner-Quadri

The works enter into a dialog with the historical editions of IG Bildende Kunst, which this time come from Thomas Freiler, Regina Hadraba, Lisi Huber, Helmut Swoboda and Grete Yppen.
With the format Hängungen we are focusing on the topic of “editions”: on the one hand, the editions published by IG Bildende Kunst between 1996 and 2001 will be shown again, and on the other hand, we are inviting current members to participate with their own works.
For Hängung #05, all members were invited to submit their own (completed) editions. Five works were selected from over a hundred submissions and are now being presented in an exciting dialog with the historical editions of IG Bildende Kunst.

Description: The exhibition fragility of being delves into the precarious nature of human existence, weaving
together themes of power, relationships, liminality, and memory. It examines how power structures
govern our bodies and actions, influencing the way we navigate the world. The intricate dynamics of
relationships, from connection to isolation, reflect our need for community and the challenges of
maintaining it. Liminality explores the transitional spaces where we shift between presence and
absence, belonging and estrangement. Memory, ever fluid, is shaped by dominant narratives; it
questions which stories are preserved or forgotten. Together, these themes provoke reflection on
the delicate balance between control, connection, and transformation. In this context, fragility of
being highlights the tenuous relations between external forces and internal experiences, revealing
how our sense of self, connections, and memories are subject to shifts that influence how we
navigate and exist within the spaces we inhabit.

This exhibition marks the culmination of the intensive Curators' Agenda: VIENNA 2024 residency
program. It is realized in collaboration with the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and under the
supervision of curator and researcher Anamarija Batista. Launched in 2015 by the Vienna-based
association BLOCKFREI, Curators' Agenda is an annual residency that offers international curators
the opportunity to expand their curatorial knowledge and immerse themselves in the Viennese art
scene over six to eight weeks. In January 2024, BLOCKFREI Collective (Nevena Janković, Eva Kovač,
and Jana Dolečki) took over the direction of DAS WEISSE HAUS, integrating this residency project
under the umbrella of DAS WEISSE HAUS.

Photo: Miae Son © Bildrecht 2022, designed by Yela An and Miae SonWhat does it mean to eat a poem? Through poetry writing and eating, sugar papers and palettes, Vienna-based artists Yela An, Ting-Jung Chen and Miae Son ask how writers “transform feelings into words” and subsequently into confectionery. This performance invites Los Angeles poets alongside workshop participants, including literary and performance academics, to contribute texts centering on traditional poetic forms and structures found throughout Asia. Each of the poems will be inscribed with the four seasons, a critical element in poetry genres from Asia, and transposed into writing. Artist-produced sugar boards and ink serve as props to the literary workshop and performance, which will subsequently be consumed as an act of nourishment and pleasure-practice.

1:1:2 unfolds in three parts over three nights, featuring one poet/artist per night: through writing, reading, and digesting. This oratory and oral activity enacted within the Schindler House transforms the modernist house with Japanese associations into a staging ground for an exploration on the history of sweetness, consumption, and migration that spans continents.1:1:2 is part of the centennial celebration of the Schindler House, made possible with support from the Graham Foundation for Art and Architecture, City of West Hollywood, California Arts Council, Department of Cultural Affairs, Taiwan Academy of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles, the MAK Center Centennial Council, the MAK Center Patron program, and our sponsors.

Echoes Woven traces psychotic breakdowns and depression across three generations of women in my family, questioning whether these patterns stem from genetic inheritance or from the external pressures of a patriarchal and capitalist society. Drawing on family photo archives and reenactment, the project situates depression not as a private burden but as a structural condition shaped by the socio-political position of women in South Korea. Each generation is placed within its specific historical moment, from the postwar period to rapid industrialization, while my own experience as an Asian woman in Western Europe adds another layer: it is from this position of cultural displacement that certain inherited patterns become most visible. The project works across two photographic registers, archival family images and staged reenactments, using photography not merely as documentation but as a methodology for inquiring into body, time, and transmission. Grounded in autotheory and speculative research, it asks what language alone cannot answer: how structural violence is lived, passed down, and quietly turned into something each woman carries as her own.

This photography series explores the complex interplay between the Asian female body and identity in Asian and Western societies. Focusing on a South Korean woman who escaped unsafe and unequal circumstances, the series delves into the challenges she encounters in coming to terms with her Asian identity within a Western cultural context. In each image, the woman is portrayed wearing traditional Korean clothing known as hanbok, which, due to its short and ill-fitting appearance, symbolizes her displacement from and marginalization within her home country. Simultaneously, the images depict fragments of the Asian female body, representing a female immigrant who is met with unwelcoming attitudes within her own society. Furthermore, the series addresses the persistence of outdated stereotypes imposed on Asian women in the Western world. The presence of water in the photographs serves as a metaphor for the deep-rooted clichés surrounding Asian women in Western society. The collision of these various factors results in a sense of suffocation, symbolizing the overwhelming pressure and struggle experienced by the protagonist.

The curator May Alqaydi’s insightful words capture the essence of Yela An’s work, Dive In, and its exploration of identity. Her full text follows:

In this series of photographs, Yela An explores the complexities of belonging and alienation and the fractures that arise while navigating the complex terrain of cultural identity.

Submerged in water while wearing a hanbok—traditionally custom-made to fit its wearer—Yela An transforms the garment into a potent symbol of estrangement. The ill-fitting hanbok, found unexpectedly in an Austrian second-hand shop, embodies the dislocation and misalignment she feels navigating between two worlds. Its improper fit, mirrors her own experience of not quite belonging, both in South Korea and Austria.

Water, typically a symbol of fluidity and renewal, takes on a more paradoxical role in this work— both nurturing and suffocating. It reflects the emotional tension of existing between two worlds that neither fully accept nor reject her, yet each imposes its expectations. Yela An’s submersion in water evokes the oppressive weight of cultural stereotypes and societal pressures, particularly the reductive perceptions of Asian women in Western societies. The glass, with its subtle flaws— scratches, bubbles, and irregularities—echoes these ruptures, embodying the fragmented experience of diaspora.

The convergence of the submerged body, constricting hanbok, and the unsettling presence of water form a powerful visual language of alienation. Yela An does not merely depict cultural dissonance; she inhabits it, inviting the viewer into this liminal space where identity is neither fixed nor fully recognized. Her work transcends the personal to offer a broader commentary on the fluid nature of identity, the limitations of cultural symbols to capture the fullness of belonging, and the profound psychological toll of living in-between.

Cacophony presents portrait images that depict the unsettled and floating nature of Asian female identity. The Korean term yonghone nosukjja [homeless soul] describes Korean immigrants who do not fully belong to either their country of origin or their host country. They are often subjected to racist demands to “go back to where they came from,” even though their place of origin exists as a fantasized memory that has changed over time and is no longer a place to which they can return or resettle. As a result, immigrants face a dilemma in which they are perceived as undesirable. The project focuses on the search for portrait photographs in Korea and Austria to capture the transformation of Asian female identity in both the home country and the immigrant country.

Racism toward Asians is often overlooked because it involves less visible physical harassment. In this respect, racist comments, assaults, and exclusion directed at Asians are frequently met with indifference. Unprovoked hatred and anger become imprinted on the victims.

This work consists of the following sentences that the artist has experienced in Vienna since 2011:
How much is having sex with you? (Wie viel kostet Sex mit dir machen?)We sell this girl as well. (Wir verkaufen dieses Mädchen auch.)At least I am a domestic asshole. (Zumindest bin ich ein inländisches Arschloch.)How can you breathe with your small nose? (Wie kannst du mit dieser kleinen Nase atmen?)Racism is also your fault because you are too kind to the people. (Rassismus ist auch deine Schuld, weil du zu nett zu den Leuten bist.)

In the interviews, four Korean artists share their experiences of racism and memories of double oppression as Asian women in Austria and Germany, both before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. They reflect on why they address Asian female identities and Asian bodies in their artistic practices.
The photographic series focuses on distinct perspectives shaped by their locations in Europe as Asian immigrants. The photographs depict mundane, silent, and unsettling moments of everyday life during the COVID-19 lockdown. In contrast, the interview texts printed on the glass of the picture frames reveal the conflicting realities Asian immigrants face in their daily lives.
This photographic series addresses experiences that resonate across Europe, and the project is planned to continue by featuring different Asian immigrant artists and their experiences in various European countries.
